چکیده

BECKMAN, ALEXANDER, AND EVELYN SATINOFF. Arousal from hibernation by intrahypothalamic injections of biogenic amines in ground squirrels. Am. J. Physiol. 222(4) : 875-879. 1972.--Injections of low doses of norepinephrine or 5-hydroxytryptamine into the preoptic and anterior area of the hypothalamus in hibernating ground squirrels (Citellus lateralis) initiated complete arousal from hibernation. Nonamine control solutions did not initiate arousal nor did amine injections into extrahypothalamic sites. Records of hypothalamic temperature (Thy) taken during these amineinduced arousals were indistinguishable from those taken during %pontaneous” arousals or during arousals produced by sensory stimulation. Injection of these amines into the same region of the brain in nonhibernating ground squirrels led to increases in Thy of up to 2.2 c.

Periodic arousal from hibernation is necessary for initiation of immune responses in ground squirrels.

Golden-mantled ground squirrels (Spermophilus lateralis) undergo seasonal hibernation during which core body temperature (T(b)) values are maintained 1-2 degrees C above ambient temperature. Hibernation is not continuous. Squirrels arouse at approximately 7-day intervals, during which T(b) increases to 37 degrees C for approximately 16 h; thereafter, they return to hibernation and sustain low T...

Absence of cellular stress in brain after hypoxia induced by arousal from hibernation in Arctic ground squirrels.

Although hypoxia tolerance in heterothermic mammals is well established, it is unclear whether the adaptive significance stems from hypoxia or other cellular challenge associated with euthermy, hibernation, or arousal. In the present study, blood gases, hemoglobin O2 saturation (S(O2), and indexes of cellular and physiological stress were measured during hibernation and euthermy and after arous...

Testosterone influences hibernation in golden-mantled ground squirrels.

At different phases of the hibernation season, castrated male golden-mantled ground squirrels were implanted with capsules that either were filled with testosterone (T) or left empty (blank). Blank-treated animals hibernated normally when housed at 5 degrees C. Entry into hibernation was prevented in the majority of squirrels treated with T several days before the initial cold challenge. T conc...

Changes in CNS responsiveness during hibernation.

The ability of the midbrain reticular formation (MRF) to produce thermogenic responses and to trigger arousal from hibernation was tested during successive quarters of individual hibernation bouts. Golden-mantled ground squirrels (Citellus lateralis) were implanted with bilateral cannula guides into the MRF. Single, bilateral, 1-mul injections of acetylcholine (ACh) at concentrations of 50, 100...
